Top Half 2004- Round 4 Report From Mt Wellington on 27th June 2004
Final Report
Mt Wellington hosted the final round of the 2004 Top Half series at the end of June. As has been the norm for the past 2 years the rain came down again but the surprises were few and far between.
Cadets
The mighty atoms were a joy to watch. In each round nothing separated the top half dozen or so. Mitchell Evans led the first six Mt Wellington drivers but overall it was Levi Madsen ? Prinn from Hamilton who took overall honours. Arie Hutton proved his worth with a well deserved second place from Aaron Hodgson, Daniel Kinsman and Daniel Colville.

Junior Restricted
Mt Wellington?s Ben Dallas took out the series from Tokoroa?s David Mezaros from Hamilton?s Tyler Richardson. These three were the pick of the bunch with Todd Sherley, Mathew Kinsman and Ryan Hellier all having their moments.

Junior
Mt Wellington's juniors took the first six places overall. The star of the series was undoubtedly Andrew Waite who won every round and was without a peer throughout the series. Although Waite was well ahead the next three places were very close with Marcus Steward leading Mike Male, and the ever improving Jayden Hughes. The final day's racing was not all for the Mt Wellington group however as David Munro and Dominic Storey both gave the Mt Wellington drivers a lesson on their track finishing 2nd and 3rd for the day.

Junior Development
Despite not having a good last round, Tokoroa?s Daniel McMillan won the series from Mt Wellington?s Jake Pascoe. Although the final day only had 14 entries the development class was well supported with a total of 21 drivers contesting at least one of the rounds.Mt Wellington?s Scott Fountain took out the final round followed by Auckland?s Graeme Smyth.

The numbers were generally very disappointing with only 5 karters contesting the final. The final days racing produced only 7 points separately 1-4 with Richard Vickers leading Paul Wood?Stotesbury from Dan Smith back to Jason Lee.

Rotax 180
Former New Zealand champion Bradley Alexander from Tokoroa closely won the day from Brent Murgatroyd who was followed by yet another evergreen karter Brian Tyrrell. These 3 took out the final results respectively.

Rotax 160
Dale Verrall Race Management team-mates Bradley Tyrrell and Paul Cameron were never more than a few metres apart over the entire series. Although Tyrrell won the last round it was Cameron who won overall with the improving Charles Hoare third and Scott Harrison (both Whangarei) 4th.Mt Wellington?s Tim Hartley was 5th and in his first year of karting Nicki Irwin 6th.

125 National
The 125 national boys made a welcome return to the Top Half after not having raced for a decade. Although primarily Mt Wellington drivers the enthusiasm continued throughout and Mt Wellington?s stalwarts Steve Brown and Kevin Varney took out the top two places. Mark Swetman took third followed by the balance of the Mt Wellington regulars.

Senior Light
Edward Fea had his best result since moving into seniors taking out the first place followed by Hamilton?s Clinton Fell with Mt Wellington?s Allan Shaw in third.Jason Catley (Bay of Plenty) is an improver in the series.

Senior Heavy
Leyton and Dion made it a Kendall one-two for Auckland and although Shane Hodgson snapped at their heels the two Auckland boys continued their good form of the nationals for a big result. After these three the tempo dropped off a bit with Russell Grinter, Brendon Simonsen and Steve Muggeridge completing the six.
