RACE REVIEW

COMPETITION FOR TYRRELL AT TAUPO

Current KartSport form man Bradley Tyrrell found himself with plenty of competition at the third round of the annual Top Half series at the Taupo Motor Racing Circuit's kart track on Sunday.

Tyrrell, 18, from Tokoroa, has been the man to beat in both the Rotax Max Light and Senior 100cc Yamaha Light classes of late but had a real fight on his hands in both classes at Taupo, winning Senior 100cc Yamaha Light from top female racer Lydia Dickinson but finishing a hard-won fourth in Rotax Max Light behind young Auckland driver Kane Taylor, 2004 Rotax Max Challenge winner Jared Carlyle and 2005 Challenge front-runner Daniel Kent.

In the other classes contested in the fine but bitterly cold conditions at the central North Island track, former New Zealand champion Darren Aislabie was back on top in Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy, winning all four heats and the final to lead home Auckland young gun Royce Rollinson and Hamilton's Clinton Fell, while  former New Zealand TQ Midget (speedway) champion Glenn Smith scored a breakthrough win in Open, leading home fellow Taranaki driver Niklaus Kiser and Auckland's Hayden Norton.

Bradley Alexander was another to 'clean-sweep' a class, winning all four heats and the final to take top honours in Rotax Max Heavy. Second was Nick Vallance from the Bay of Plenty, third Hamilton's Grant Aitken.

Auckland's Ryan Hellier won a close-fought Junior National class from Jayden Hughes and local driver John Bassick while Richard Moore got the better of both James Stead and Nick Cassidy in Junior 100cc Yamaha Restricted.

Bradley Hicks was the big winner in the typically closely fought Cadet class, working his way to the front in three of the four heats (in the third from as far back as 15th place on the grid) then winning the final from pole. Second and third were fellow Aucklanders Kieron Rollinson and New Zealand champion Arie Hutton.

In the inter-club stakes Auckland topped the leaderboard from Hamilton, Rotorua/Taupo and the Bay of Plenty.
