Race Day Maintenance Checklist

It is a good idea to have a specific checklist that outlines the types of inter-event and inter-race checks that you might want to carry out. Below is a checklist that will help you:
 
PRE-RACE PREPARATION

Ensure your name is embroidered on your race suit and wetsuit before you start racing.

Start of Race day:

Prime Carb:     Remove the airbox and sparkplug. Make sure that the plug is fitted back to the plug cap and earthed on the cylinder head to prevent damage to the ignition module. Prime carb by covering the throat of the carb and spinning the back wheels until fuel comes out the throat of the carb. Check to see there are no airlocks in the fuel line, and then refit the airbox. Lube chain and re-fit the sparkplug.

Before and between races:

  • Check Tyre pressures
  • Check wheel settings
  • Check hubs are tight 
  •  Check for sparking plug 
  •  Check ignition unit is tight
  • Oil chain
  • Check fuel level
  • Check for full throttle
  • Check chain oil in airbox 
  • Check jet settings
  • Check exhaust nuts, clamps and springs
  • Check chain tension, sprocket bolts are tight and chain is still in line with sprockets
  • Check cables and brakes
  • Check your grid position for next race!

Between Meetings:

ALL of the above plus:

  • CLEAN your Kart! (You?ll be amazed what you find when you do it!)
  • Complete nut and bolt check. (All of them)
  • Check fuel filter & replace if necessary
  • Check fuel line and replace if necessary
  • Clean gauze filter in carb. (Located under then pump cover gaskets and diaphragms on the bottom of the carb.)
  • Check number of hours on the engine and get serviced if necessary
  • Check tyres and replace if necessary (NO dots left ? NEW tyres!)
  • Treat tyres (if applicable)
  • Clean combustion chamber (wipe out carbon build-up)
  • Drain your gas tank
  • Check brake pads for wear and remove (or add) shims or replace pads
  • Check toe and camber

Helpful Hints

Tyre Pressure:
DRY   Hot day:    14lb front; 16lbs rear (pressures taken HOT) 
           Cold day:  16lbs front; 18lbs rear (pressures taken HOT)

WET                     18lbs front; 18lbs rear (or as per manufacturer?s recommendation

Jet Settings:
1+1/2 1+3/4 turns out from lightly bottomed out (low speed jet) 
½ turn out for high-speed jet (may require removal of low speed jet) 
(Marked L and H on carb.)

Spark Plug types:
COLD day: (also wet day)                    NGK b9eg. B9ev, b9egv 
                                                                  BOSCH w08cs
HOT day: (also for clutch engines)     NGK b10eg, b10ev, b10egv 
                                                                   BOSCH w07cs

Wheel settings:
FRONT:                    1 to 2 spacers per side 
REAR:                       1320mm to 1345mm overall width from outside to outside

Oil Types: 
Use RACING 2-stroke oil; mix at 20:1 (i.e. 50ml per litre of gas)
Use a minimum of 96 octane petrol

WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN
Everything! Date, track, all settings (kart), temperature, any changes and the settings you ended up with at the end of the day. It might not help you now but it may start to make sense in a month or two?.
