EVENT REPORT

HAMILTON CLAIMS JAPAN TRIP PRIZE ON KARTING RETURN

Christchurch kart-turned-car racer Matthew Hamilton was the big winner at the two-day Euro City Audi 2006 KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championships at Hastings over the Easter weekend, taking out the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light title - and with it an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan courtesy Yamaha Motor NZ.

Multi-time former South Island and New Zealand karting champion Hamilton, 23, is racing in the Indy Pro single-seater motor racing series in the United States this year, but a two month-long break in that series' schedule meant he was able to return home and compete at this year's Sprint Kart Nationals in Hawke's Bay and next weekend's Placemakers V8 Supercar meeting at Pukekohe where he will race in the Toyota Racing Series.

Though he was overshadowed by Wellington's Phillip Watkins and New Zealand international Mitchell Cunningham, in qualifying and the two heat races, Hamilton flagged his intention to be a serious title - and trip - threat by working his way from 11th to sixth place in the 15 lap Pre-Final, then won the 25 lap Final after Pre-Final winner and Final favourite Mitchell Cunningham lost momentum after trying to regain the lead from Watkins and Hamilton, then tangled with Karl Wilson at the next corner.

Cunningham and Wilson were out on the spot and with Watkins also slowed by the Cunningham pass, Hamilton was able to pull away, eventually crossing the finishing line just over a second in front of Watkins who in turn was just over a second in front of Palmerston North's Joshua Hart.

Senior 100cc Yamaha Light was one of six championship classes contested on Saturday at the Hawke's Bay Kart Club's ZM Raceway at Roy's Hill north-east of Hastings.

The fastest qualifiers held sway in all but one of the other classes on Saturday, with Jason Lee winning Formula 125S, Tony Chambers 125 cc Rotax Max Light, Simon Hunter Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy and Matthew Penrose Junior 100cc Yamaha.

All four qualified quickest on Friday then won their heats, Pre-Finals and Finals on Saturday.

The only exception was in the Cadet class where North Island champion Ben Drummond (who qualified eighth) won the New Zealand title after an all-action final which saw fastest qualifier and Pre-Final winner Scott Manson from Nelson battle mightily with Auckland's Paul Blomqvist and - once he caught up - Drummond.

Manson looked like the winner early on but towards the end of the 25 lap race the advantage swung back in Blomqvist then Drummond's favour, Manson eventually crossing the line fourth after being passed for third on the second last corner by Auckland's Aaron Wilson.

For Jason Lee, who has been the dominant figure in 125cc gearbox class racing of late, the Formula 125S result was a foregone conclusion, the young Aucklander underlining his superiority by also setting the fastest race lap in the two heats and the Final.

Second place in the Final was a fitting reward however for another young Aucklander, Daniel Bray, who missed the start of the first heat but finishing fourth in the second then second to Lee in both the Pre-Final and the Final.

Having spent more time behind the counter of his kart business than the wheel of his Arrow kart in the past two years, New Zealand Arrow and Rotax Max importer Tony Chambers had only an outside chance of winning a New Zealand title at Hastings this weekend, but that's exactly what the former New Zealand representative did, stamping his authority on the Rotax Max Light class for a perfect pole position and four starts from four wins result.

Last year's New Zealand Rotax Max Challenge winner, Joshua Hart, ended up second overall, with former South Island and New Zealand Rotax Max Light champion Fiona Hamilton (Matthew's older sister) third.

Auckland's Stuart Marshall was quicker in qualifying, but come Saturday's Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy class races, Christchurch's Simon Hunter was not to be beaten, the multi-time South Island Sprint and South Island and New Zealand Road Race champion always in front when it counted.

Marshall crossed the line in second place in the Final in front of Palmerston North's Fraser Hart (older brother of Joshua) and local hero Donna Lee.

Meanwhile Hunter's Christchurch Kart Club clubmate Matthew Penrose proved again that he is one of the country's finest young KartSport talents by adding both the New Zealand Junior 100cc Yamaha and New Zealand Formula Junior titles to his CV over the weekend.

Penrose won the South Island Cadet class title in 2001, and both the New Zealand Junior Restricted and South Island Junior 100cc Yamaha title in 2004, then the 2006 New Zealand Junior 100cc Yamaha title on Saturday and the 2006 New Zealand Formula Junior one on Sunday.

On Saturday he was one of the drivers to complete a 'clean sweep' winning both heats, the Pre-Final and the Final, the latter from Aucklander Graeme Smyth and Manawatu's Mitchell Hill.

He had a harder row to hoe in the Formula Junior class on Sunday however, after Hamilton's Tyler Richardson won both heats and the Pre-Final.

But the Final became Penrose's for the winning after an incident which saw Richardson slow then retire from the race. Second - in a repeat of the Junior Yamaha result on Saturday - was Graeme Smyth, third, another one of the local drivers, Zach Zaloum.

In the other classes contested on Sunday Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha went to North Island champion Nick Cassidy after a sometimes fraught Final in which the young Auckland driver was shadowed for most of the way by a duelling battle pack consisting of James Hadley, Dean Kirk, Chris Cox and Arie Hutton.

Defending champion Mitchell Evans looked good for a repeat of his 2005 success in Invercargill, winning the Pre-Final and starting the Final from pole position, but he lost time after being passed for the lead early in the race and eventually crossed the line a frustrated fourth behind Cassidy, Wellington's James Hadley and South Island champion Chris Cox.

Australian visitor Warren White Jr was in the thick of the action in the Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha class,

Sunday's only class clean sweep belonged to Jared Carlyle, the former Rotax Max Challenge winner and New Zealand representative setting a pace none of the other Rotax Max Heavy class contestants could match.

Former New Zealand champion Brent Humphries got as close as anyone else in the second heat, crossing the finishing line 2.3 seconds behind, but in the Final Carlyle simply drove away from everyone else, eventually crossing the line almost three seconds in front of Taranaki's Mark Gilmer.

After a clean sweep of his own in the F125S class on Saturday, young Aucklander Jason Lee looked set for a repeat in the Intercontinental C races on Sunday - but no-one told arch-rival Ryan Grant.

Grant - fresh back from a successful test for an ICC team in Italy -  won the first heat and both the Pre-Final and Final with Lee second and fellow Aucklander Ryan Urban third.

Lee's was one of the drives of the day, the Formula 125S champion forced to start the 25 lap Intercontinental C Final from the back of the grid after being forced out of the Pre-Final (the race which determines the grid for the Final) by a mechanical problem.

Meanwhile, controversy raised its head in the Formula 100 class, with the Final delayed an hour late on Sunday afternoon after debate over the starting procedure.

When the race was finally started young Aucklander Simon Evans grabbed an early lead and spent the first half of the race dicing with fellow young gun Bradley Tyrrell.

However defending class champion William Thomason slowly caught then passed the pair to win the race and keep the title for another year. Evans drove the race of his life to finish second, with Tyrrell third and one of the other young chargers in the field, Auckland's Daniel Bray, fourth in front of Wellington's Karl Wilson and Senior 100cc Yamaha Heavy champion Simon Hunter.
